University attendants have become even more of a force to be reckoned with in sumo, with new ozeki Onosato and top-tier debutant Takerufuji combining to win half of 2024’s six Emperor’s Cups.
While the Japan Sumo Association is attempting to stem the decline in the number of its wrestlers, top amateur prospects are increasingly willing to bide their time at university before entering professional sumo, something that is evidently paying dividends.
