Secretary of State Marco Rubio wasted no time making his mark on the State Department on Monday, issuing an order implementing a “One Flag Policy” at all State Department facilities both domestic and abroad. No more will divisive symbols designed to appease narrow constituencies of the Democratic Party hang from flag poles of U.S. embassies around the world, just Old Glory.
“The flag of the United States of America united all Americans under the universal principles of justice, liberty, and democracy,” the memo Rubio signed just minutes after he was unanimously confirmed by the Senate reads. “These values, which are the bedrock of our great country, are shared by all American citizens, past and present.”
Barack Obama was the first president to put a divisive flag in front of our nation’s embassies abroad, placing LGBT pride flags in front of U.S. embassies in Brazil, Germany, Israel, and Latvia. The first Trump State Department, led by former Secretary Mike Pompeo, reversed Obama’s policy, returning to the original “One Flag Policy.”
Former President Joe Biden’s secretary of state, Antony Blinken, not only reversed Trump’s first “One Flag Policy,” but even extended it to all U.S. embassies, allowing ambassadors everywhere to use their discretion on whether or not to fly the LGBT flag between May 17, the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia, and the end of June.
Biden’s ambassador to the Vatican then chose to fly the LGBT flag in the face of the Catholic Church every year since.
Biden himself followed up on the divisive flag policy, not only allowing embassies across the world to fly divisive flags but even encouraging them to fly the Black Lives Matter flag on the anniversary of George Floyd’s death.
What is the point of flying the LGBT flag in front of the Vatican besides antagonizing Catholics around the world while pleasing radical gender activists here in the U.S.? Why are U.S. embassies celebrating an organization that has called for an end not only to the institution of marriage but also to law enforcement entirely?
What flags U.S. embassies are allowed to fly may not seem like a crucial issue, but flags serve as important symbols, not only to Americans at home and abroad, reminding us of our shared values, culture, and history, but also as symbols of unity to foreign populations.
When Democrats such as Obama and Biden fly flags that, at best, do not reflect the overwhelming consensus of the public and, at worst, actively sow hatred and division among its people, they are undermining national unity at home and weakening our national security abroad.

Unfortunately, the Democratic presidents have proven themselves incapable of avoiding the temptation to fly divisive flags from our embassies abroad. That is why Congress should pass, and Trump should sign, the One Flag for All Act, which would make it illegal to fly or display any flag other than the American flag on federal buildings and properties anywhere in the world.
Just as Republican presidents shouldn’t be encouraging ambassadors to fly National Rife Association or Blue Lives Matter flags from U.S. embassies abroad, Democratic presidents shouldn’t be flying LGBT and Black Lives Matter flags either. Hopefully, some wise Democratic senators will recognize this insight and work with Republicans to make the One Flag Policy permanent.
