Romania’s Supreme Court has annulled an ongoing presidential election after allegations of Russian interference, and the entire process, which was due to end this week, will have to be rerun, Reuters reported
The second round was scheduled for Sunday, and voting has already begun at polling stations abroad, pitting pro-Russian far-right candidate Calin Georgescu against pro-EU centrist Elena Lasconi.
The court said in a statement:
“The entire electoral process for the election of the president of Romania will be rerun, and the government will set a new date and… a timetable for the necessary steps.”
Calin Georgescu had been polling modestly ahead of the first round on November 24, 2024, but has since surged to first place, raising questions about the outcome!
Calin Georgescu wants to end Romania’s support for Ukraine against Russia’s invasion, and if he wins the presidency, that would reverse pro-Western policy in the EU and NATO membership, pushing Romania closer to a belt of countries in Central and Eastern Europe with strong populist and pro-Russian politicians, including Hungary, Slovakia and Austria.
