Sakie Yokota, the 88-year-old mother of Megumi, who has long been the face of North Korean abductees, says faith has helped her survive the daughter’s disappearance from Niigata, a city on the Sea of Japan coast in central Japan, in 1977.
Life has been a never-ending struggle for Yokota as suspicions that Megumi might have been abducted by North Korea came to light in 1997 and North Korea notified Japan another five years later that she had “died,” without providing clear evidence.
