The eruption within the Halemaʻumaʻu crater came to a halt at approximately 8:40 PM local time of the lava draining back into the southern vent, which was the sole vent actively erupting at the time.
The seismic tremor also began to decline around this time, and the summit deflation, which started on December 29th, is ongoing but is expected to slow, stop, or transition to inflation in the coming hours.
The lava within the Halemaʻumaʻu crater is still moving slowly, with crustal overturns anticipated in the hours following the pause. While the vents may continue to emit a glow, degassing remains at elevated levels.
Gas emissions measured yesterday were approximately 30,000 tonnes per day.
It remains uncertain if lava drainback will occur, as the vent’s internal structure may prevent the lava from flowing back into it.
