The rate at which Iran can enrich uranium to 60% purity, roughly 90% of the level needed to make nuclear weapons, is increasing dramatically, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi told Reuters in an interview.
Iran is likely to respond to new attacks from Israel or additional Western sanctions by moving closer to crossing the nuclear threshold, according to a newly released U.S. intelligence assessment.
The assessment, released by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence on Thursday, says that while Iran is not currently ready to build nuclear weapons, it is undertaking activities that put it in a better position to produce them, if it chooses to do so.
Since July 2024, the report says, Iran has continued to increase its stockpiles of 20% and 60% enriched uranium, while also building and operating an increasing number of advanced centrifuges.
The U.S. intelligence assessment warns that Iranian officials are increasingly willing to publicly discuss the feasibility of nuclear weapons!
The report said: “Iran has the infrastructure and expertise to rapidly produce weapons-grade uranium at multiple underground facilities, if it so chooses, and Iranian leaders recognize that this would enhance the credibility of threats to develop nuclear weapons.”
