Two men have been arrested in connection with a drone strike in Jordan that killed three U.S. service members and wounded 47 others earlier this year, FBI and law enforcement officials announced Monday.
Mehdi Mohammad Sadeghi, 42, a dual U.S.-Iranian citizen, was arrested in Massachusetts, and Mohammad Abedini Najafabadi, also known as Mohammad Abedini, 38, of Tehran, Iran, was arrested in Italy.
The FBI is working to extradite Mohammad Abedini to the United States to face justice, according to U.S. Attorney Joshua Levy.
Both men are charged with conspiring to export advanced electronic components from the United States to Iran, a violation of U.S. export control and sanctions laws.
Mohammad Abedini is also charged with providing material support to a foreign terrorist organization.
The two suspects were arrested after FBI experts analyzed the drone used in the deadly attack and found that its navigation system was linked to an Iranian company owned by Mohammad Abedini, officials said.
Mohammad Abedini is said to have used technology transferred from the United States by his alleged accomplice.
“These charges demonstrate that the Department of Justice will not stop its efforts to bring justice to members of the military who are killed or injured overseas,” Joshua Levy said at a news conference on Monday.
The drone strike on Jan. 28, 2024, targeted the Burj 22 military base in Jordan, near the Syrian border.
