Over the past few days, seismic activity in the Awash area has picked up significantly. At least 5 quakes of magnitudes around 4.5 have been registered in the past 48 hours alone. The strongest quakes such as one that happened an hour ago are being felt as far as in the capital Addis Abeba.
The real number of quakes is unknown as there is no seismic network (or at least no publicly available) covering the area and only the largest events can be identified on global networks.
However, our current expedition group spent last night in the area and reported that they felt about 7 tremors during the night in Awash town, suggesting that the real number of quakes is likely in the hundreds.
The risk of a new volcanic eruption in this part of the African Rift is now higher than before, because the most likely cause of the quakes is a (shallow) magma intrusion, which in turn can easily break the surface and produce an eruption. People in the area should be on alert.
